In a major move aimed at improving passenger safety, the Meghalaya government is set to introduce a new rule that will require all commercial vehicle owners to display driver details inside their vehicles. The announcement was made by Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh, highlighting the government’s efforts to ensure safer travel for both residents and visitors.
What Information Must Be Displayed?
Under this new rule, commercial vehicles must visibly display the following driver information:
These details must be placed where passengers can clearly see them while travelling. The idea is to create transparency and promote accountability during transport.
Who Will This Rule Apply To?
The rule will apply strictly to all vehicles that operate under a commercial permit issued by the transport department or district transport offices. It will not be enforced on private vehicles or those owned by government departments.
Why This Rule Matters
According to Minister Lyngdoh, the rule is designed to:
“This rule builds trust between drivers and passengers,” Lyngdoh said. “When people know who is driving them, they feel safer. It also acts as a strong preventive step against any misconduct.”
Boosting Tourism with Safer Travel
As Meghalaya continues to attract tourists with its natural beauty and rich culture, the government sees passenger safety as a top priority. The minister added that this small but effective change will contribute to a more reliable and tourist-friendly transport system across the state.
One Month for Implementation
Once the official government order is issued, all commercial vehicle owners will have one month to follow the new rule. They must ensure the required driver information is displayed correctly and remains visible at all times. “This is a simple but powerful step,” Lyngdoh concluded. “It gives peace of mind to passengers and reminds drivers to act responsibly.”
